Altitude Training is shown to improve endurance by up to 35% and sprinting ability by 25% in one month’s time.
(Chicago, Illinois)—Well-Fit Triathlon & Training has announced the opening of the Midwest’s first commercial use altitude training chamber at their facility in West Town. Altitude training has been used by almost every Olympic level athlete for decades and has been shown to increase an athlete’s endurance by up to 35% and sprinting ability by 25% in as little as one month’s time.
Altitude training improves our body’s ability to absorb and process oxygen. Because oxygen availability is critical for our body to perform, improving the capacity to carry and utilize oxygen is significantly correlated with improved performance. It is a powerful training stressor that cannot be replicated in any other way.
The benefits of altitude training, in addition to acclimatization for mountaineering and high altitude endeavors, includes increasing the aerobic capacity by improving VO2 max and time to exhaustion at lower intensity levels. It improves repeat sprint ability, giving athletes “more matches to burn,” as well as reducing recovery time. It has also been shown to accelerate weight loss through increased calorie burn and reduction in the hunger hormone after exposure.
While altitude training has often been used by high performing elite level athletes and mountaineers, studies show that the greatest gains are actually achieved by novice to mid-level athletes. The Well-Fit chamber will apply the “live low- train high” method, utilizing a variety of training protocols and programs for athletes of all levels and specializations; endurance athletes, sport-specific competitors, time crunched moms and weekend warriors.
“Over the past 20 years I’ve seen training methods come and go. However, I have not seen a training method that is so significant in improving athletic performance than that of altitude training,” said Sharone Aharon, owner of Well-Fit. “The Australians and Europeans have been using altitude training protocols on mid-level athletes for more than 10 years and have experienced incredible results across all sports. We are thrilled to be one of the first to bring commercial altitude training to the United States.“
The 500 square foot chamber can accommodate 10 athletes at a time at elevations of 5,000-15,000 feet above sea level. Well-Fit will be offering altitude member classes, class packages, 4 and 8 week programs as well as specialized group programming leading up to big races such as the Boston Marathon, Ironman Wisconsin, the Leadville 100 and the Triple Bypass. Well-Fit is offering all new clients a one-week complimentary pass to sample altitude training and learn about its incredible benefits.
In addition to the altitude chamber, Well-Fit has expanded and renovated their cycling room, complete with 24 individual training stations, live data analysis as well as a brand new sports conditioning room.
